Salesforce Trailhead: a new way to learn working on the Force.com platform

As a Salesforce Administrator & Developer I’m always looking to expand my knowledge on the Force.com platform.
Salesforce provides lots and lots of different resources to its customers which help them to better work with the platform and deliver “best-in-class” results. Ranging from the Help & Training portal to the different Customer Success Communities, as well as the different free workbooks and paid instructor-lead courses they offer.
A couple of days ago I stumbled upon a new, completely free, way of learning that Salesforce developed called Salesforce Trailhead
Salesforce Trailhead, even though hosted on https://developer.salesforce.com/, is a learning platform from which everyone working with Salesforce can benefit. It provides an interactive way to learn specific modules like Apex, triggers, VisualForce, formulas, workflow and visualflow, etc… from both a theoretical as the practical point of view.
As you know a Salesforce Administrator has to know a lot! And most administrators also want to learn some basic coding skills. That’s where Trailhead comes in handy!
At the time of writing Trailhead provides 11 modules:
- Apex Basics & Database
- Apex Testing
- Apex Triggers
- Workflow Automation
- UI Customization
- Data Management
- Data Modeling
- Formulas & Validations
- Salesforce1 Mobile Basics
- Force.com Basics
- Visualforce Basics
- and hopefully many more to come!
So, eager as I am to try it out, I just completed my first module “Apex Basics & Database”.
What I like about it is that each module is split into smaller chunks of theory, almost always ending in a small practical assessment. You have to get a free developer account and connect Trailhead to it. Salesforce made this super easy. Just login with your developer account, click the button “Connect to my developer org” and your done.
The exercises are explained very clearly and after you did the exercise, the tool will evaluate if you did the exercise correctly.
Passing each submodule earns you points and at the end of each completed module you earn a badge, like my first one:
Earning points and badges adds that extra motivational aspect to the platform. It’s easy to monitor your progress in your profile and you can complete the modules, you want to learn more about, at your own pace.
Thank you Salesforce for this brilliant new resource and I really hope there will be more modules added, with real use case examples as exercises.
So hurry up! Go discover Salesforce Trailhead and start expanding your knowledge in a fun way!
